March 1 Theme: Purple

Click photos for a larger view.

OMG PURPLE! 😀 It’s been my favorite color for as long as I can remember. My passion for it has ebbed and flowed over the years, but no color has ever usurped it. It’s soothing, regal and incredibly versatile. Best of all, most of the various shades of purple go quite well together (unlike, say, reds), so it’s totally fun to coordinate! It’s also great for distracting employers from your black-laden Gothiness. I’d say my love for purple has finally reached full-on obsession status.

Purple Corporate Goth Blazer

This deep plum blazer is from Frederick’s. I have to say, I love many items in their business attire line, as they really know how to do structured without going stuffy. There’s no reason a corporate outfit can’t still be extremely feminine! Now, some of their stuff naturally is NOT as work-appropriate as they would like their customers to believe… For example, I also purchased the skirt to go with this blazer in my usual size and it was obscenely tight. I sent it back and exchanged it for TWO sizes larger and it was still too tight for work. That one was returned as well, and at that point I gave up on the matching set. 🙁

Corporate Gothic Blazer

I found this skirt on sale at New York and Co. last fall. It’s a nice, heavy matte satin. No stretch, so it’s a bit stiff and wrinkles after sitting all day, but that lovely berry color helps me overlook such flaws. I love it enough to even get over the fact that the skirt intended to accompany this blazer was not meant to be mine!

Purple Goth Business Attire

The best features of this blazer are definitely in the back. Those amazing pleats ensure that this outfit looks fabulous from every angle.

Purple Corporate Goth Blazer

My purple passion has certainly not gone unnoticed at the office. I have an iPad and iPhone that I carry to meetings, and both devices have purple cases. Of course, I’m often wearing purple as well… Walking into meetings with that degree of color coordination never fails to elicit comments from other attendees. As much as I don’t like calling too much attention to myself at work, it’s really a great ice-breaker and I think it detracts from the fact that I don’t tend to say a lot during meetings (I’m more the “let me take it all in and think it over and I’ll get back to you later with my brilliant ideas” type).

I understand there are a few Purple-Haters out there (hard to believe, I know!). But for everyone else, start linking! 😀

Announcement: Theme for March 1: Purple

The theme for March 1 is: PURPLE

You guys all knew it had to happen sooner or later. It’s no secret that purple is, by far, my very favorite color. More than half of my non-black wardrobe is purple, my house it purple, my car is purple, and someday maybe even the Maine Coons will be purple. 😉 My hair and my blog used to be purple. Shockingly, this has never been a Monthly Theme before! Now that the blog is a nice antique beige, I thought we should finally pay tribute so that Purple doesn’t feel rejected. Because Purple has feelings, too!

Feature whatever you want to share, as long as it is PURPLE! It does NOT have to be an outfit post. Explore any topic that appeals to you. Whatever you choose to feature can be any shade: lavender, eggplant, berry, aubergine, lilac, etc… Any form of purple will do! 🙂

Be sure to come back on March 1-3 and submit your post.

How It Works

On the first day of each month, I will post my theme post with the Mr. Linky sign-up form at the bottom. You can link to any post you’ve done that day or previously, as long as it matches the theme. Be sure to add the icon to your post, and link your post to mine using the Mr. Linky box at the bottom. You can post your theme post earlier than the first of the month, or link to an old post, but you must add it to Mr. Linky on my first post of the month. I will leave the Linky open until 11:59 PM PST on March 3, so everyone has three full days to post.

You don’t have to participate every single month. Feel free to join in whenever you wish. Just be sure you get your post linked before the third day of the month!

You don’t have to do outfit posts. Post on whatever type of subject matter you like, as long as it is related to the theme.

Also, let’s keep the posts appropriate for all ages, in terms of both language and imagery. Thanks!! 🙂

Posts that are linked up without including the icon will be removed from Mr. Linky.

Monthly Status Report – Love What You Do

Click photos for larger view.

For This is CorpGoth’s Monthly Status Report, I’m excited to unveil a brand new look – not for my wardrobe, but for my blog! I’ve been doing this site for nearly two years and have never really sat down and done a design for it. I was just settling with using templates plus a few customizations… Considering that I have been a graphic designer and web developer professionally for the past 15 years, I thought my blog deserved a better effort. So today it gets a new design, as well as a new backdrop for photos!

Gothic Casual Friday

I’m one of the lucky ones who managed to get into a career doing what I always dreamed of. All through high school, I loved graphic design and set my sights on that as my future job. I went to college and earned my BFA in graphic design, but even then the professors warned us that it can be a tough field and that many of us would end up elsewhere. Luckily I had already landed a full-time design gig a year before I even finished college, so I knew I was ahead of the curve.

After about two years of doing print design, I became interested in building web sites. Since then, I’ve done both design and development in most of my various positions. I will say that getting into web work is the one regret I have in my career. While it is incredibly lucrative and has certainly helped me boost my income and has kept me working even through tough times, coding is NOT my passion and dealing with technological glitches all day really brings me down. However, I remind myself of those oh-so-encouraging college professors who told us most of us would never even be designers, and then I feel thankful that at least my work is 50% design.

Gothic Casual Friday

In my last job, while I started off as both a designer and developer, over the 11 years I was there politics kicked in and because I was a contractor, all of the design work eventually was handed over to the “real employees.” I ended up spending 40 hours a week doing nothing but HTML coding. My boss refused to lift a finger to fight for me to keep the part of the work that I so loved. While that actually was not the reason I ended up leaving, I am so thankful that now I am in a position where there is a healthy balance of technical and creative. I feel like my career is much more where it is supposed to be.

Gothic Casual Friday

All that being said, while it is a great blessing to do what you really love as a full-time job, sometimes it’s hard to get motivated to do more of the same on your own time. That’s why the design of my blog has never really lived up to my aesthetic standards before. Today I’m truly proud for the first time of how my blog looks, beyond just the photos, and I can thank my awesome career for giving me the ability to do it!

Head over to This is CorpGoth to see what other bloggers love to do, and submit your own status report!

January Theme: New Year’s Eve

Click photos for a larger view.

Happy 2013, everyone! I don’t know how well it will work out doing the theme late this month, but let’s give it a shot! Mr. Kitty and I spent New Year’s Eve down in San Diego with some dear friends, so I was not able to take photos of my outfit or get a post prepared by midnight January 1, my normal Monthly Theme day. In fact, I almost didn’t even get the post done by January 5, due to having come down with the plague on January 2. I’m really starting the new year right, aren’t I? 😉 So I’m writing this month’s theme post while under the influence of DayQuil.

I must admit I had a major wardrobe crisis for NYE this year. For the entire year of 2012 we had it set in our minds to go to a certain formal event with a gourmet buffet, champagne and dancing for NYE 2013. I even had an evening gown picked out for this occasion 365 days in advance! When it came time to make our reservations for this event, we found a shocking amount of hidden costs and shady bureaucracy involved in the process, so on December 29 we abandoned that plan and decided to just go out to dinner with another couple then over to their place for drinks. As much as I don’t mind being a bit overdressed, the idea of wearing a floor-length satin gown under the circumstances would have been too absurd even for me. So at the last moment I was scrambling for something special enough for such a glamorous holiday but still comfortable for the environment we’d be spending it in.

I ended up choosing this fabulous velvet overdress by Stop Staring!, paired with a lace skirt from Forever 21. To make it even more festive, I added a couple of “arm parties” and a self-made headband with ostrich feathers. Yes, I wore plumes, and it seemed perfectly appropriate for the night. This turned out to be something I would normally wear out to a club. Next NYE, that evening gown might finally make its debut, but either way, this year was a good opportunity to focus on celebrating some of the most special people in our lives. It’s not what you wear, or where you go, but WHO you spend your time with that matters most.

I hope all of my readers had as much fun on NYE as I did! Be sure to link up your NYE post below and share your special memories.

Theme for January: New Year’s Eve

The theme for January is: NEW YEAR’S EVE

I’m going to do something a little bit different this time. I really wanted to do NYE as the theme for January 1, but then that doesn’t leave everyone much time to prepare their posts after the big night. So this month, we’re going to do the theme beginning January 5 and ending January 7.

The dawning of a new year is one of my favorite times to celebrate life. It represents the end of a stressful, busy, expensive holiday season and the beginning of a new phase of beautiful experiences to share with those we love. In honor of this most festive of nights, your post can be anything related to NYE – what you wore, how you celebrated, who you shared the evening with, any resolutions you might have, etc.

Please note the date change, just for this coming month!
Be sure to come back on January 5-7 and submit your post.

Mid-Month Status Report – The Office Holiday Party

Click photos for larger view.

Burgundy Corporate Goth

Another Mid-Month Status Report is due today over at This is CorpGoth! This month’s topic is Holidays in the Office; what you would wear to the office holiday party, etc. I lucked out because my department doesn’t seem to be planning any evening/weekend events (it’s busy enough this time of year), but we do have a couple of gatherings going on during office hours. In fact, there are quite a few gatherings going on during office hours. I’m not entirely sure why there are so many. Anyway, this is what I wore to one of them.

Burgundy Corporate Goth

The berry-colored pencil skirt is the latest in Target’s line of tasteful, classic business wear. I just picked this baby up two weeks ago, so they are probably still available!

Burgundy Corporate Goth

The ruched cowl-neck shell came from Express a few months back. This is the first time I’ve worn it because I had to alter the arm holes a bit for a proper fit.

Burgundy Corporate Goth

I thought a blazer would be a bit too structured for a holiday vibe (plus I’ve done the blazer/pencil skirt/shell combo a LOT lately) so instead I chose a simple sweater shrug. Since it’s still been around 75 degrees here most days, the short sleeves worked out perfectly.

Burgundy Corporate Goth

Does your workplace have a holiday party? Is it during working hours, or on the weekend? What do you wear? Share your festive Corporate Goth looks over at This is CorpGoth!

December 1 Theme: Maxi Skirts

Click photos for a larger view.

December is upon us, and it’s time for another One-Day Monthly Theme! On my side of the globe, most people are experiencing something resembling winter. I say most people, but those of us in Southern California are excluded. It’s been hot here. Not just unseasonably warm; downright sweaty hot!! My point in choosing Maxi Skirts as the December theme was that in winter, they provide endless warmth-capturing layering opportunities. But I haven’t needed them for that purpose this year. Not so far. Still, I wear super-long skirts year-round, so a little hot weather won’t stop me.

Goth in Lace and Corset

For the car shows, I’ve been trying to dress in my ideal style rather than trying to be super practical and going with casual outdoorsy wear. Especially considering the shows we go to focus on custom cars (those that are not only old, but stylized by the owners as to be one-of-a-kind). This kind of car culture appeals much more to us than just a bunch of stock classic cars that all look the same. Customs speak to our artsy aesthetic preferences and our need to be around individuals who are free-thinkers. We feel at home at shows like this (except for the inevitable moment where some guy approaches me and asks me to pose in front of his hearse, resulting in a polite declination from me that usually escalates into a full-on rant about stereotypes that I later deliver to my companions).

The main feature of today’s outfit is a ruched fishtail skirt from Newport News. I’ve had it for several years and it remains on of my absolute favorite clothing items. It’s form-fitting and flattering and comfortable, and the perfect element for instant glamor. For a full day outside and on my feet, the only corset I really feel comfortable in is this classic underbust from Gallery Serpentine. I know, you’ve seen it many times on this blog, and you’ll see it many more. 🙂

Gothic Maxi Skirt

The stretch lace top with bell sleeves, mock turtleneck and keyhole opening was also from Newport News several years back. One of my friends teased me that I might end up with a lace-pattern sunburn at the end of the day… I laughed her comment off because I’ve always heard the one about the fishnet sunburn and in my experience, it’s a complete fallacy. Fishnets are too fine a mesh to actually leave a pattern on the skin – the sun seeps right around the threads and you actually end up with a nice, even burn. Well, it turned out that parts of this lace were plenty dense to block most of the sun, so sure enough my upper back looked like a strange alien skin when I got in the shower that evening. Fabulous.

Gothic Makeup

This hair style is created with two clip-on synthetic hairpieces and three black rose clips. I went with my standard makeup and a pair of fabulous chandelier earrings with no other jewelry. I thought these babies should stand on their own without any competition. They’ve been in my earring drawer forever and I never seem to wear them because I usually am obsessed with bold necklaces, and adding bold earrings would be too much even for me.

Gothic Club Outfit

So, hopefully some of you out there are actually experiencing some good “layering” weather. Bring on the maxi skirts!

Theme for December 1: Maxi Skirts

The theme for December 1 is: MAXI SKIRTS

The weather has cooled down for those of us in the northern hemisphere, so it’s time to start adding on the layers. My favorite way to stay warm is with a super-long skirt! You can hide all kinds of tights, socks and leg warmers underneath and still look darkly elegant. Maxi skirts come in all types and weights of fabric, so those of you who are experiencing summer right now might go for something sheer or made from lace. For those of you who don’t do fashion posts, you could share inspirational photos, do a polyvore, etc.

Be sure to come back on December 1-3 and submit your post.

November 1 Theme: Hosiery

Click photos for a larger view.

There is a very good reason why I chose Hosiery for the November theme! I’ve recently come to love Spanx opaque black stockings, after years of being loyal to Capezio’s Hold and Stretch dance tights. My last two Capezio orders were total disappointments, so I decided to try Spanx. Their products are all impeccable in quality. Pricey, but they will last for many, many wearings. Since I loved their tights so much, I’ve been branching out and trying some of their designer hosiery. Last month when I went to place an order, I stumbled upon this masterpiece.

Floral Back-Seam Fishnets

These back-seam fishnets with a stunning floral detail set me back a whopping $45!! But they are simply amazing. The fishnet weave is delicate, sleek and form-fitting, just how I like them. The floral detail in the back is classy, feminine and unique. We spend so much time focusing on how every detail looks from the front, so it’s nice to give a little attention to the rear view once in a while.

I know this theme is going to bring in a huge variety from all you Goth bloggers out there, so start linking! 🙂

Theme for November 1: Hosiery

The theme for November 1 is: HOSIERY

It’s a proven fact that Goths love legwear, and there is an amazing variety out there to be loved! Everything from classic opaque black tights to vintage back-seam stockings, striped socks to neon fishnets, there are never-ending options for the creative and adventurous Goth to accessorize their legs. Now’s your chance to show off your absolute favorite legwear. This could be pantyhose/stockings, tights, socks, legwarmers, or whatever you like.

This one might be tough for those of you who don’t do outfit posts, but who doesn’t love a challenge? 😉
