Romantic Goth Office Outfit

Last fall I became totally enamored with this ivory lace blazer at Forever 21 and had to make it mine. I was excited to be a little bit unconventional and pair it with my long lace skirt from Newport News, seen previously in this post.  This outfit is from my post stash from my old job that I never got around to publishing…  I still barely have time to think straight, much less take blog photos, since starting my new job.  But I promise a new set of outfits showing what I wear as “the new girl” will be coming soon!

The blazer sat in my closet for a while because it’s very sheer and I don’t have a light-colored shell or anything to go under it … A cami would have looked tacky, because the jacket is sheer enough that the straps would have been obvious. Finally I realized I could just put a white t-shirt underneath, as long as I disguise it from the front. That’s where the silk chiffon scarf comes into play. Tied into my “signature” scarf-bow, I topped it off with one of my favorite brooches. This brooch came with a sweater I once bought from Newport News.

The brooch features faux pearl drops and rhinestones, so I wore pearls and rhinestones in my ears to match. I also wore my silver rose ring, because it seemed to go so nicely with the blazer. And, since I’ve also been into really big hair flowers lately, here’s a giant off-white one I made myself, previously shown with one of my black and white outfits. I’m just about the only person in my office who gets at all creative with hair styles, and definitely the only one who wears flowers, so this big one might be a bit much for work.

Do you think over-sized hair flowers are too ostentatious for an office environment?

re: Hair flowerIt blends perfectly into the outfit and is NOT visually distracting. Green light on this large hair flower.

I am in love with that blazer! I think the hair flower looks great, but am not the best judge on if it is ok to wear to work. I tend to wear large Things on Head. Although I do not wear hats. Probably cannot get away with hats.

  3. Gorgeous! I love the jacket, really beautiful outfit. I am also looking for more white and ivory clothes :D .

I love this one, it totally jumped out at me. And that jacket is to die for.

The outfit is so well composed, it has a classical, a bit victorian feel of it. I'm sure you are the most well dressed person at your work (both your last and recent). I would like to wear more hairflowers but since I'm in the factory several times a day I have to put on a hair net. My hairstyles need to be easy to maintain. I have a red flower in a snood I use sometimes in a ponytail.Flowers in the hair add that little extra I think.

Nice to have you back, I hope, it's not too stressful at your new job! ^^I love hair flowers, small ones as well as big ones. They can look ostentatious, but I think, it depends on the color and the way you wear it. Adding one or two to your bun is less bold, then one on the side, for example. Your hair in this post looks absolutely office – appropriate to me! ^^

Love that blazer (you know I also share the love of jackets!) and everything ties so wonderfully together. I hope the new job is going well, we all miss you in blogger-land! Flowers: I think they are be a bit much if they are worn in the typical "pin up" style to work, but accented in the back is lovely! Gotta accessorize! ;)

I think it's going to depend on the office culture, and how well one can pull off the look. It looks lovely on you, but I'm not sure I could do it.

Love how you used the neck scarf to fake a more formal blouse with the blazer! Smart Girl! I really have to use that trick next fall!I agree with everyone else that the way you're wearing your hair flower "blends" more into the outfit and isn't too ostentatious.Nice to hear from you – I hope it's happy busy at the new job! We miss you!

Very elegant. I think it's the scarf-as-jabot that really makes the outfit.I don't think the hair flower is over the top, but I am also a big fan of wearing Large Things on Head. I have a pair of very large spider barrettes that I wear regularly. Weird is normal for me, and people seem to accept it, and (mostly) like that I'm just being me.

Wow, gorgeous as always! I feel like this looks as though you could have walked out of a 1940s Gothic horror film, in the best possible way. Love the ivory lace jacket. :)

  13. I think you have the most amazing sense of style – everything you put together is always in the best possible taste. If I were to attempt an over-sized hair flower accessory, I'm quite sure I would be laughed out of the office, but you carry it off wonderfully. I really enjoy reading your blog, and hope your new job is everything you hoped for!

Hi Pretty Lady!!! As much as I miss you and your posts, I know that you must be so incredibly happy and relieved that you are at a new place in your life and job. I look forward to hearing all about your fashion journey in a new place. BTW: that is one gorgeous jacket! And that brooch is just lovely.Hair flowers, well … I do where them when I'm teaching, and some of them are rather large. Like you, I wear them to accent a bun or ponytail, towards the back and away from my face. I get complimented by my fellow faculty, but then again I do teach art history and I'm surrounded by both historians and artists all day. I find that creative people or those involved with creativity are much more accepting of bolder hair flowers and styles. It shows your ability to be creative and to think out of the box, but also that you can put beautiful and visually appealing things together. As long as it's towards the back I honestly don't think a large hair flower is a problem. They look so elegant on you that someone would be hard pressed to criticize them or you.
