Le Professeur has tasked us with another fantastic challenge for April’s Monthly Homework Assignment. This time, she asks us to create a post inspired by visual art. I was a bit sad that I so recently featured my dress covered in ladies from classical art for my March 1 Gray Theme… But that’s what challenges are for: to push the limits of our creativity and encourage us to come up with new ideas.
Today’s post is inspired by the fairy artwork of Amy Brown.
I’m not necessarily a huge fan of fantasy art, but I’ve always loved Amy Brown’s fairies. My attraction to them can most definitely be attributed their stunning sense of dark fashion. Many of her fairies represent a sartorial ideal to me, and have probably been somewhat of a subconscious inspiration to me in building my wardrobe over at least the past 5 years.
In contemplating my solution to this month’s homework assignment, I explored the Web sites of various “dark” artists before it dawned on me that without question, Ms. Brown’s work would be the perfect source for a visual art inspired look. And the image that immediately spoke to me (and that I knew I could emulate to a respectable degree while being true to my own look) was:

Thanks to Mr. Kitty for the wonderful art direction on this one, as on most of my “special” posts. He is so much the other half of my brain, he always knows exactly how to help me get what I am looking for. He also keeps me from getting frustrated by reminding me that humans actually cannot exactly recreate poses taken by characters in watercolor paintings… At least, not without dislocating my left shoulder and removing a few vertebrae…
Next time we go clubbing, don’t be surprised if I end up dressed like another of Ms. Brown’s elegant creatures!

Thank you so much for you sweet comment <3And your picture is totally awesome, the dress looks exactly the same! I seriously love everything in your wardrobe xD
Aaaw, you look truly beautiful on this pic, just like a fairy, even without the wings!^^ Everything about this look is gorgeous, especially your make-up, hair and facial expression. Both You anf Mr. Kitty did a great job!
Oooh, I love this outfit! Not least because I'm a huge fan of gothic faeries.
Also, thanks for commenting on my blog, and you're welcome! I'll tell you a secret, #4 in that post was very much connected to #7.
^^
Awww I remember when I was a teenager I had a folder of Amy Brown's art saved on my computer (these were back in the days before broadband when saving pictures meant much faster viewing). I used to long to look like her fairies, thanks for reminding me that I can
I think you've posed as close as humanly possible. It's a very elegant outfit you've put together there. I used to be a big fan of Amy Brown's fairies when I was younger and a big fan of fantasy art in general. I think this is a homework assignment I can take part in… Time for me to go all Pre-Raphaelite maiden.
Love this! It's great to have a creative other half to help with artistic endeavors. Sweetie and I team up on projects as well. It usually consists of me exclaiming "Oooh make this! Let's make this!" and he makes it.
I help where I can but I have a hard time taking what is in my head and making it tangible.
Ok, where are your wings?!? And Ed wants to know if you have stripy stockings under that skirt a la Amy Brown? LOL! This is SO awesome. My dear, you are the perfect Amy Brown faery! Thanks for participating!
PS: HUZZAH to Mr. Kitty for all of his help!
It's just as bad as trying to get models to pose in Varga pin-up poses. I think you both nailed the Amy Brown-esque fairy pose and made it even better!
Comment 2.0 [technical difficulties ate the first one]You're lovely as usual~! Pshaaaw, who needs to replicate a fairy pose when Kitty-san has surpassing grace and poise to begin with~. I love this dress to the nth degree.
Well done. Well done indeed! If I were the professor, I would give you A+!
A beautiful look and the similarities with Amy Brown's art are clearly visible!
Lesthi, thank you for the lovely compliment!
Lynoire, thanks! I tried to do fairy-appropriate makeup with lots of purple. I wish I had taken a close-up of it!DuskRose, I wondered if those two points were related. ;-DJulianne, I remember those days!
Le Professeur, thanks!! No; no striped stockings. That's where the fairies and I part ways in terms of wardrobe choices (I know; I'm such an anti-stereotype!). I love them on the fairies, but not on me.
HouseCat, thank you! I'm looking forward to seeing your post.Electrobat, I saw your post and know what you mean!! Mr. Kitty and I have different skills, making us a very complementary team. It does add a new level of reward to the relationship!Meagan Kyla, okay, at first I read that as "Viagra" and thought you were kinda strange… lol!! I get it now, and you are so right. Not to mention the inhuman proportions… WHO has legs that long?
Sir Isaak, lol! Wow; that's one of the most awesome compliments ever. I'm honored!heatherphillips, thanks! I hope Le Professeur read your comment.
Love the photo and the inspiration! This is great
Oh my goodness, what an excellent idea! You look so awesome. I love Amy Brown too but I would have never had thought to do this. You're awesome.
