I adore this cute little top, with its hook and eye front closure, ruching on every seam and cute cap sleeves. But it’s made from that dreaded, cheap stretch lace I am constantly complaining about. As usually, it has developed little teeny tiny elastic threads sticking out at every seam. Zillions of them. I tried trimming them away at first, but they rapidly returned and even multiplied. So today is this top’s farewell performance. I just had to wear it one more time so I could take pictures, where you can’t see those nasty little guys waving around obnoxiously… It really was the perfect top, in terms of design. Such a shame about the cheap materials.
The tiered mesh skirt is from Macy’s (you remember it, I’m sure, because I’ve already worn it here so many times…). I wore this with a silk chiffon scarf tied in an interesting way; something I learned over at 37 Ways to Tie a Scarf. The cross pendant was a gift from Mr. Kitty.
What is your favorite way to tie a scarf?

Can you take the top apart and use it as a pattern? Could reincarnate it in decent fabric…
The cross pendant is really lovely. And for the top. I think you'll defiantly find something to replace it. As for the scarf… French knot is my favorite. If not it, I just twist it around my neck till it ends
What a major bummer when you have to say "goodbye" to something lovely, but cheap material is just no good.I like short scarfs tied in the front, sorta 50s rocker style.
I HATE that cheap elastic lace stuff too. It's such a pain; cutting off the bits does only make it worse! Such a shame; it's a very pretty top.
Have you thought about covering the seams with some kind of trim? I don't know it that would work, but if it were me I'd try that before tossing it.
I know exactly what you mean! I have a couple of adorable lace tops that are fraying out with those threads. I guess you get what you pay for.
Farewell! I hate getting rid of an piece of clothing that I really like. On the other hand, when they show a lot of wear, that usually means you got a lot of use out of it.
The top looks lovely on thepictures but I can imagine how uncomfortable it is to wear clothes with fraying fabric. I made the mistake to buy nice clothe s with cheap priceand after a few washes I could clearly see how cheap they were. maybe you could save the ruffles to use for an altering project?
may i ask how big your wardrobe is?it is a pretty top so i vote for tante fledermaus' suggestion of using the top as pattern
I hate that stupid, cheap lace-thingy so much too…I resolved to avoid it, but I alwas end up buying it and then I'm angry at myself when those threads start to come out…such a pity, your top is so pretty! As for the scarf: I don't like to wear scarfs, only those heavy, knitted things with my coat in winter…:)
Tante, I love that idea! Time is a huge limiting factor for me… But I'll put it in the sewing pile and see what happens!Audronasha, the french knot is true simple elegance. I love it!Meagan Kyla, I love that style, too. I think it works best with square scarves. I need to get some!Hexotica, someday I will learn to stop buying stretch lace… I'm getting much better, but there are still a few pieces I'll be blogging, complaining about and purging before I can fully put it behind me…
Anon, hmmm… That idea has potential! Thank you!katysioux, that is so true… Sometimes it's hard to resist the impulse to buy something that's only $15 or less, but then it's not worth it if you only get to wear it three times!Lady Bethezda, not so much use in this case… Just cheap!
Hopefully I can replace it with something I will love equally and that will stand the test of many wearings!linnea-maria, great idea! I love this crafty group. So many great re-purposing suggestions!kakuidori, I have an embarrassing amount of clothing! It's my only vice.
Mr. Kitty and I were extremely fortunate when we bought our house just two years ago: the market in our area was at rock bottom, so we got a fairly large place for a steal. That means I scored a ridiculously large walk-in closet. It is feeding my clothes-shopping addiction, but I suppose it could be worse. ;-D Lynoire, I am in the same boat! Can't resist the pretty things when they are in front of me and on sale!
Sometimes I can't stand a scarf around my neck and I'll scratch all day, so I know what you mean! Have to be in just the right mood for them if they are not functional to keep the cold away.
Awww, it really was cute! Such a shame.. :c
Oh, cheap stretch lace…*sigh* I recently consigned to the Goodwill an otherwise perfectly lovely skirt I bought at Forever 21, because it was made of stretch lace and had elastic threads sproinging out from it like a million tiny spider legs. It is such a pretty top you have there-does the stretch lace cover the whole top, or is it just on the sleeves? Because if it's just the sleeves, you could probably take them off, trace them onto some nice solid non-stretch lace, and stitch your replacement sleeves on without having to dump the whole thing. And when I wear scarves, I like to wear them the same way you're wearing it today-wrapped smooth in the front, with trailing tails in the back!
Farewell pretty lace top! It's a shame when something looks nice, but is destined not to last because it was poorly made/made from not so good materials. You do look good in this post though, so at least it gets a very nice memento. The only scarves I wear are winter scarves, and I refuse to knot them because I'm terrified one day one will be my noose.
Love those red nails! Goodbye, pretty top that has served its purpose and now needs to die a graceful death.
Ahh, I have that exact shirt too! I love it, but it has also done the same thing; so I don't wear it much anymore.
I reaaly love your scarf style.sexy..
