Lace and Jersey Knit

Today’s top is a repeat, but the rayon-spandex jersey knit skirt from Spiegel you haven’t seen before. I have two of their jersey skirts, and I love them for their classy comfort. However, allow me to tell you the two things I do not like about these skirts. First, they are cat hair magnets! Somehow they are even worse than regular cotton jersey. I remove all the cat hair before I leave the house then remove it again when I get to work, yet every hour I still find this fabric covered in cat hair even though there are no cats in my office!!

The second issue with these skirts is that, despite only containing 5% spandex, this fabric stretches a lot on any pressure points throughout the day. By lunchtime, the rear end is totally sagging and there are stretched spots over my knees. Not a very flattering silhouette.

This top is one of the few that I really like for either work or the weekend. I’ve worn this one before in my first car show post. For work, I just add a shrug to cover the sheer cap sleeves.

Do my readers have any tips on how to prevent clothes from stretching out of shape throughout a long day?

  1. Oh, Kitty, I love this outfit!! Too bad about the stretching skirt because the whole thing looks fabulous. I especially love the top and the shrug, reminding me that I still don't own one (shrug that is).. Time to shop! :D

Seems like the skirt is allowed to be worn only a few hours. Too bad because this outfit is very nice. The gathering of the skirt matches the top perfectly. I have no ideas of what to do with a stretching out skirt. The only thing I could think of to test is starch.

  3. I adore that top! Wherever did you get it?!No tips on how to make skirts not stretch unfortunately. I tend to purchase pleated skirts, so stretching is not an issue I've come across yet…

Aww i know what you mean with the cat hair. All of my clothes are covered in cat hair. I like to think i rock the goth cat look. XD

I, too, wish there were a way to keep jersey knits from stretching out. The elbows of my long-sleeve knit tees look ridiculous after about three hours. Double knit is much more resilient, but it's not always easy to find.I love the ruched sleeves on your shrug! Looks great with the top.

  6. Kamyria, thank you! Oh, you must start collecting shrugs right away! I find them to be such a cute way to transform tops. I have about a zillion (several are homemade).linnea-maria, good thought about the starch. I might give that a try! I do love the front gathers on this skirt.Unlacing, the top is from either Venus or Body Central (I get the two confused because they are fairly similar and they both annoy me regularly with catalogs). ;) I think it was Body Central. It came in white with black lace and burgundy with black lace. I was tempted to buy both…Cali, lol! I like that look. I think you just invented a new sub-genre of Goth. ;-DBane, I love ruching too! :) I know what you mean about the stretched elbows. I will just have to try not to buy jersey knit so much, but sometimes it's hard to tell online, and the descriptions don't always specify.Le Professeur, thank you! I do love the feel of jersey knit (and the lack of wrinkling!). Comfy and elegant, until it stretches and sags (and until you sit down and end up with a rear end covered in cat hair… *giggle).

I'm going to start collecting more shrugs too now; you've inspired me!That top is almost the same as one we sold at my work under the Miss Me label; I bought one last summer. Only mine does not have the satin edging on the top.

Oh, what a sophisticated and pretty look! I love the detailing in the top — it's so soft and elegant. I actually love jersey knit because it travels well and is comfy. However, the stretching is for the birds! I can't figure out to keep the shape of the garment throughout the day. But perhaps that's the comfort and beauty of jersey knit? It may look tailored but it has the heart of a sweat pant.

  9. A wonderful outfit on a wonderful lady. How do you stay so thin?? Love your figure ;) Gothically yours

  10. Hexotica, yay for shrugs! :) How cool that you have a similar top. Have you worn it on your blog yet? I can't wait to see how you style it.Audronasha, thank you so much for the sweet words!! *blush* Basically all I do is eat very healthy (with an occasional indulgence) and exercise about 4 days a week. I'm not crazy about exercise, so I just try to walk a 15-minute mile and do 15 minutes of mild strength training.

This outfit is gorgeous. I wish I could prevent stretching. I have one dress in particular that stretches horribly. It starts out in the morning very flattering, and by the end of the day it turns into dowdy.

Love this outfit, especially the top with the shrug. It's too bad about the skirt stretching. But you look lovely!
