Work Week is Over; Time to Get Cute!

I posted my “work” version of this look yesterday, then came home and re-styled the outfit for a fun evening with Mr. Kitty to celebrate the start of the weekend. I’ve done some other Day to Evening transition posts, but with this one I decided to be a bit more drastic.

Fall weather is finally starting to approach Southern California, which means it’s time to break out the shorts with tights! Any time I see a fashion blogger sporting this look, I can’t help but comment that when I was a teenage Goth (late 1980s) we were all doing the cut-off denim shorts with black tights (or fishnets) and the mainstream world said it was a huge fashion no-no. 20 years later, it’s EVERYWHERE, and oh-so-chic.  I don’t mind, because Goth girls will always do it better.  :)   Actually, it’s even more adorable with today’s sophisticated options in shorts.

I kept the blazer and cami from my work outfit, but got brave and donned this pair of shorts over white lace tights. Mr. Kitty was a fan, and our usual waitress at the sushi place we go most every Thursday announced that I was “not allowed to look that cute.” Thanks for the massive ego boost, Favorite Sushi Waitress! :)

I’m sporting the Morgana Cryptoria Lip Balm in Hathor. As I mentioned in my review of these lip balms, this one is probably my favorite color of the whole line but it requires more maintenance than the other colors. Maybe the tube I received was older and starting to dry out, or maybe it has something to do with the dark color and intense amount of pigment. Either way, a coat of Burt’s Bees underneath helps, and it’s worth the trouble!

I also did a quick-change on my hair by clipping in a couple of artificial pigtails over my bun. The choker is a DIY project: just a scrap of white lace trim with beads and a butterfly cameo sewed onto it. The cameo is from Jo Ann’s Fabrics, found in the section with the buttons and such. This was probably a $2 project. I made wristbands from the same lace later in the evening, but not until after I had already photographed the outfit. :( Can’t wait to show them to you later on!

A stunning outfit! Shorts and tights certainly look good together, and well yes, 80's goths were true trend-setters… ;D The choker is very pretty too, certainly doesn't look as cheap as it obviously was!

I never think to layer shorts over tights! This is super cute. Love the choker and can't wait to see the wristlets. That's my kind of DIY! It's also nice to see you in a look that I sometimes shy away from, for fear it might look "too young." This outfit might put you right up there with Pauley Perette as someone who can wear youthful things well and look fabulous. The secret must be in the layering. Cute, but covered. =) Yay!

I meant, put you up there with her as my personal inspiration. I edited that sentence several times and it still didn't come out right. LOL

  4. I also wore cutoffs with black tights in the 80s, and caught flak for it ("Did you cut yourself shaving?"). Of course when one of them did it years later it was "super cute". Blech. On a more positive note, I love the lip color. Reminds me of the wonderful shades Urban Decay used to make. :)

I really dislike shorts in any kind of combinations, I don't find them pretty at all, moreover, the way the rest of the girls wears them is kinda vulgar…not on you though :) Anyway, they're somewhat unflattering for my body type, so probably these are the reasons why I feel so uncomfortable whenever I try one on…but it's just me, and even though I don't wear them, I admit that they're probably very comfy…The cami and the blazer are adorable, on the other hand, I really love the cut of the blazer, especially the narrow neckline. :)

  6. Gorgeous outfit, you look adorable!! Oh, and I love that choker!! :)

I agree with the suchi waitress, that outfit is super cute! The choker is great, and a wonderful example of a really quality piece coming out of a cheap and easy DIY project.

I like it but I think it would look better with grey tank and tights. But then thats just my dislike of white lol

I use shorts over tights a lot. One of my favourites is tights a pair of grey shorts with black print and a dark green tunic. Your outfit is fabulous!! It looks so nice with the white thights on. Have a lovely weekend

This outfit is way cute! I love that lace choker, very nice. hehehe … so you were wearing the cut off denim shorts and black tights/fish nets too? Yup, me too. :D You do realize we were just adorable? Yes? Yeah, I think so. And the fact that you've updated that look is phenomenal! COOL BEANS!But I do have to say, shorts today would be a brrrrr. The forecasters are talking snow. COME ON! Before Halloween?!? So not right.

I am SUCH a fan of shorts with tights, goth or otherwise and you, my friend, are adorable. LOVE THIS LOOK!!!

  12. Raphael, yes we were. ;) Thank you for your nice comments!Traicetrak, I think you found the key: "Cute, but covered." I think that lends dignity to anyone's look, regardless of age. Of course, showing a little skin is okay too, when it is balanced and tasteful (for example, if I have a low-cut top I will pair it with a more modest skirt). It's such a fine line between sexy and smutty. ;) Minakitty, lol! I know exactly what you mean. And I love some of the colors Urban Decay makes! Their eyeshadows give me rashes, but that's just me: lots of brands do that to me so I stick with Bare Essentuals and Ben Nye for the eyes. :( But I can use just about any brand of lip product.GaGa_Filth, yes they are quite comfy! :) I think tights lend a lot of modesty to shorts. I would feel waaaay to exposed with that much bare leg!!

  13. Kamyria, thank you!! :) Sabayon, thanks. :-D This is my ideal kind of DIY because I tend to have a short attention span (partly because I have trouble finding time to complete more complicated projects and then I get anxiety because unfinished ideas start to build up… *sigh*).Hellcat, lol! I think a grey combo would be great with these shorts. I will try to put something like that together soon, if I get a chance before it gets too cold!linnea-maria, that combination sounds cool! And thank you. :) Le Professeur, yes, we absolutely were totally adorable. And we still are! ;-D Sorry about your snow. :( I was out and about in short sleeves today… ;) Angie, aww, thank you! Your comment made me smile.

    What a charmingly adorable outfit!

Yay, another fantastic black & white outfit! Love what you did with your hair. For me, dark blue corduroy shorts and dark blue tights with huge white dots in 1993… I had a all-dark-blue phase in 1993/94 and wrote long letters to goddess Selene in my diary. I felt like Midnight and Full Moon. :)

  16. Electrobat, thank you! That's a sweet comment.Sal, the outfit you describe sounds cool! I want to see you recreate it!! :)

  17. I hate that you can wear shorts this late in the year. It just snowed here in the East yesterday. You do look too cute!

  18. Jamie says:

Wow, what a beautiful outfit! I don't normally love shorts with tights, but that's because a lot of the times the girls I see around campus wearing them are wearing frayed denim cutoffs with hole-filled and runny cheap tights, not lovely and classy shorts with pretty tights like you have here! The whole outfit says "Cabaret" to me in the best way-I love everything about it!
