Stubborn Shoulders

This little top is “vintage” Forever 21 (by vintage, I mean I bought it ages ago). I admit it is much cuter in the photos than in real life, mostly because the shoulder pieces don’t want to stay put in that lovely shape. They tend to slide up, making this just a tank top. And it’s not too cute at all like that. But while they are behaving, it creates a very lovely neckline.

This is another style I featured in my Simple, Classy Hair Styles post. True, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to come up with the idea of a side braid, but I think we often forget how classy this style is. Personally, I don’t think it works super well on me since my hair is rather thin. Ladies with thicker, tailbone-length or longer hair are almost obligated to wear this style, as it looks amazing on them. My gorgeous sister is the perfect candidate… I hope she will do a guest post for me someday!

So beautiful! The top, pendant and hairdo. <3

That shirt is gorgeous on you. I love the necklace with it. Have you tried double-stick tape or sock glue to keep the shoulders in place?

  3. Beautiful. I have thick, curly hair that I wear in a side braid. Best way to wear my hair when it is humid.

I like the side braid very much on you! Also like the necklace and top. :)

  5. The color of the top is really beautiful, it's too bad the sleeves won't stay put. The side braid looks good on you, I've tried it once or twice but somehow I can't get it quite right.

I love this combo. Absolutely gorgeous.

Gorgeous! I love the color of the top. I second Sabayon: try fashion tape. It actually might keep the sleeves in place.

I love the top. The lace, style, color, and especially the neck line are just my kind of thing. I've had the same problems with necklines and found that pining them to my bra straps helps spread them out; you can keep your bra straps a little out and they anchor the top. :)

Gorgeous! I'd love to see your sister. I'm growing my hair out and longing for the day my hair looks good in side-braid – right now, it just makes me look like a lopsided Pippie Longstocking. I second Hexotica's advice. I don't think it would work with this top, but I've occasionally tied the straps of tank tops to my bra straps with a bit of pretty ribbon fashioned into a bow.

That color is so lovely on you. And more lace!I don't think a braid needs to be really thick to look good. I think your braid looks very nice. I wish my hair was that long, however as soon as it gets past my shoulders it starts to knot up so much I can't deal with it.And I love the necklace too.You are a fashion inspiration to me.

  11. Lulu, thank you! I am glad you like the cobmination.Sabayon, alas I have tried fashion tape, but it doesn't seem to hold up well with the amount of movement the shoulders get. I could try a longer strip of it – I usually cut them in half trying to be cheap. :) I'll try again with full strips and hopefully that will do the trick!Le Professeur, thank you! I will try the tape again, hopefully with better results.Vivienne, curly hair is beautiful in braids. And you have a very lovely name!!Sal, thank you!!Aristocratic Elegance, I think a side braid is a bit tricky when you are used to braiding down the back. I have trouble getting it smooth at the top, but practice (and hair spray) makes perfect! ;) Sunduri, thank you!Hexotica, that's also a great tip. I do have my straps tucked in there, so maybe I could get that to work to my advantage. I adore necklines like this too, but they are so complicated! :) Becky, lol! Oh, I love the idea of ribbon bows. That's an elegant solution to outfits where the bra straps partly show!!RubyAlison, thank you for your sweet words! That means a lot to me. Long hair does take a lot of care. If you decide to try and grow it out, try lots of deep conditioning and a silk leave-in product. It makes a HUGE difference!! Yes, I have been very into lace lately. But don't worry; I'm saving something special for my October 1 Lace Theme! ;-D

This outfit is great! The top looks just gorgeous on you. I have a couple of tops that do the annoying slide up and loose their lovely neckline, it's irritating! Great hairstyle too :)

I love the top-it's so pretty! I have a couple of peasant tops like that-there is just something about that elasticated, slightly-off-the-shoulder neckline that refuses to stay up. It's a great combination, and looks very sharp and pretty on you!

  15. Lovely top! I also love the pendant n_n.

New reader going through the archives… I love this outfit (ok, I love your style in general!), and think the top is lovely. Have you considered adding a touch of lining or boning to the straps to secure them? Even a ribbon stay might do the trick without being intrusive.Thank you for your blog, it's wonderful!Stitchlingbelle

  17. Stitchlingbelle, thank you for your tips! Yes, there might be a way to fashion some kind of support system for those darned shoulders… :) I'm so delighted that you are enjoying my blog!
